Was Pontiac making any RWD cars other than the firebird when this came out? I've always moaned that this thing should have been the next GTO but with RWD back in the 90s. Had they switched it to RWD earlier, they could have headed off the whole Dodge Charger craze by offering their own 4-door RWD coupe.

Unfortunately not. I think it would have been a great rwd. My guess is that with the w-body platform that this thing shared with so many other GMs that they didn't want to "waste resources" on a rwd w body.

I have heard of people making these rwd tho. Quite an undertaking if you ask me, especially when you can go out and get a GTO for less hassle and prob cheaper.

It has enough of a cult following, I'm not surprised.

I drove enthusiastically against a Gran Prix GT (not the GTP) in high school, and it blew me away how fast it was compared to how it looked. It was one of hte reasons I started looking in to serious driving techniques (beyond 'slam the pedal') since it actually cornered pretty well and had the power to back it up.

They are pretty amazing for being a 90's GM product.

This is actually my 2nd one and seems a little slower than the first one, just a lot more sluggish and not as much get-up-n-go. I wish I could've fixed up the first one but there was too much wrong and just not enough funding from me to revitalize it.

Try a smaller diameter tire or maybe new front bushings. If the engine is still in good shape, it may be losing torque through the front wheels somehow. Weight differences from different speaker/stereo options and stuff like that can make a car seem slower.

I used to never drive with more than a half tank (as long as I stayed in town) because it bothered me how sluggish my car felt with an extra 60lbs in the tank.

You noticed 60 lbs? What were you driving, a Lotus Elise? I don't notice any actual degradation in performance until I have more than one other person in the car.

It was a 3000ish lb Mustang (SN95 with a lot of stuff removed) and it didn't have a lot of power, (especially since I barely weigh 120lbs, on a good day) so yeah, 60 lbs was a 2-3% improvement and directly over the rear wheels. Granted, it took me a year of driving it to become familiar enough to realize that was what was causing the difference.

I'm still impressed you noticed a difference at all. My frame of reference is a '96 Grand Prix with 160 hp. Although my gas tank is in the middle and traction isn't lacking, so in that sense, it would probably make much more of a difference to your Mustang.

The tank was actually so far back that it hung out over the rear axle, and the tires were pretty skinny, so you're right about that.
